I was purchasing cards for my husband, and the lady at the cash register seemed a little overwhelmed.
I can only imagine what she experiences in a day. Happy customers. Not-so-happy customers. The stories she must hear. The things she must see.
When she greeted me and asked me how I was, she didn’t even look up. I responded,
“I’m doing well. How are you today?”
And I flashed the brightest smile I could flash.
That seemed to catch her off-guard. She looked up, smiled back, and said she was doing okay.
I don’t believe she was expecting me to be friendly, nor to share a smile with her. I wondered if someone being nice to her is a rare occurrence??
That two minute interaction showed me something. It proved to me how far friendliness, and how far a smile can go.
There are numerous ways we can bring a smile to someone’s face today. Numerous.
Instead of me making a list, I’d love to collect a list from my readers. Below, share one or two ways you and I could cause another to smile. Something we can do? Something we can say? I’d love a big, long list!
My desire was to see this girl smile. A smile always feels better than a frown. And she deserved to have someone be nice to her. Those were two simple things I could do right then to hopefully make her smile: Share my smile and be friendly.
Be the reason someone smiles today.
She handed me my bag, looked me in the eyes, and said in an upbeat tone as she smiled, “Thank you. You have a great day.” And through my smile I told her to do the same.
I hope she did have a great day!
